This past weekend we went to visit Loren’s sister and she sent us home with her Pampered Chef round stone pan because she rarely used it and even though she had seasoned it, pizza would still stick. So we took it home with us … we are all about taking in spare rejected kitchen items. I attempted to make a homemade pizza this afternoon and to make a long story short … it was a disaster; not unlike most of my kitchen adventures. I will spare you those details. I am sure that you are thanking me … so let me just include “you are welcome”. I have to include though that the pizza stuck … just like we were warned.I have heard that one way to season a stone is to bake a giant cookie on it … one with lots of butter in the recipe. Well, my husband thought that I was crazy when I told him this and so began the big debate. I spoke my side and he disagreed and gave his own opinions on what would work better. In the end I said, “I could be right you know?” and he responded “And so could I”. It was decided that I would try my idea first and if it failed I would admit it and then we would attempt one of his ideas.
I made a BIG chocolate chip cookie and baked it on the stone
Looks like I won this debate … a BIG cookie was the deciding factor this time around and I am happy to report that I was the winner.
Not a bit of sticking and the pan appears to be well seasoned. Butter is a beautiful thing. I did have to cut it up though because our flour of choice at the farm is whole wheat, which means everything turns out just a bit dry so I didn’t slide it off the stone for fear of crumbling.
So at the end of the day, my BIG cookie won the BIG debate and I am gloating in my victory. I will enjoy the victory while I have it since I am sure there is another debate just around the corner.
Would sprinkling it with cornmeal before putting the crust on the stone keep the dough from sticking? Well…it’s no longer an issue, because it’s now seasoned! I really want a chunk of that cookie! Do you bake your bread, also? When you only use whole wheat do you have to change the recipe at all?

This could be a case where even if you were wrong, you would have ended up being right. You simply can’t go wrong trying to win an argument with pastry.
Well played Stephanie – well played.

Aunt Jeri … yeah they suggest cornmeal too, but I didn’t have any so of course I opted for the “butter”: option. You can’t go wring with butter after all. :)
David … Thanks, I may be a “new” wife but I have learned lots and one of those lessons learned is to provide sweets. :)

Even though I seasoned the stone with oil in the oven it never worked for me either. I guess the cookie is the sure-proof way to season stoneware. Great job seasoning and finding a creative way to get some yummy chocolate into the house. You will have to tell the person who recommended “cookie seasoning” that she/he were absolutely right! Josie
PS You can always feel free to reject any of my excess kitchenware, household stuff. :)
