Candy Making Extravaganza

candy-making.jpg

Extravaganza sounds like a pretty big deal huh? … well, maybe it wasn’t really an extravaganza … but it was a busy and yet fun day.  Rather then bore you with lots of words I will let these photo’s tell the story … or at least most of it.   Lots of hand modeling was going on so thanks to all those hands that made much work light and enjoyable.  :)

There were a few little hands “helping” …

as well as lots of big hands …

We used lots of chocloate … 15 pounds total …

Mom tried her hand at “shaking” the candies … and laughing she said “oh … you should put this on the blog!” … and since I always obey my parents … here it it.  :)

So … that was the day.  In the end we made the following:

Peanut Butter Cups, Coconut Bark (both white and milk chocolate), Dipped Pretzels, Chocolate Covered Cherries, Haystacks, Peanut Clusters (milk chocolate), Peanut & Raisin Clusters (both white and milk chocolate), Pecans & Craisins Bark (white chocloate), Chocolate Covered Apricots, and Popcorn Cakes (4 total).  So after that list maybe it can offically be called the candy making extravaganza!

  1. Impressive! My day was similar but I was working alone, and my variety wasn’t so big. It wasn’t an extravaganza, maybe just an event. :) I do look around at everything I’ve made and am thankful the kids will be here to help eat it!! My list:
Fudge, “Snickers” bars, rocky road bars (some with peanuts and some with crisp rice because I can no longer eat nuts), Choc. covered cherries, layered mints, mint truffles, chocolate truffles, chocolate dipped buttercreams, caramels, chocolate dipped caramels, turtles, and snickerdoodle cookies. Took me more than a day though! All I have left is the decorated cut outs. For the first time in about 25 years I’m not doing candy bar cookies, something had to give…unless I just can’t stand not to.

  2. Mary, good job on the shaking!

  3. Everyone has to be good at something, and I’ve come to the conclusion that I’m good at making everyone else look competent! :) In oh, so many ways!! I’ve noticed while visiting blog sites that everything always looks so perfect, so I thought Steph should show at least one photo of reality. I bet you will have to make the candy bar cookies. After 25 years, why stop now?? You had an impressive list of candies by the way! Enjoy Christmas with all your family, Jeri.
Steph, you did an excellent job of keeping things organized and remembering everything as usual. Thanks for the fun day.

  4. YUM YUM and YUM should say it all!

(By the way: how do you keep your kitchen so tidy and organized while in the midst of so much activity??)

  5. Jeri … Just for the record, your Candy Bar Cookies are my FAVORITE! I think of them often and wonder how you did such a perfect job. Yum. I am going to bake this week for a few gifts that need to be mailed.

Mom … Your shaking of candy was just fine, it didn’t help that it was an open ended container when all the rest had sprinkel holes. :)

LaDonna … It wasn’t my kitchen … ha! But really, almost all of us there are “clean as you go” cooks and so it wasn’t too hard to keep the area clean. I find it is much easier to clean as I go … it eliminates much of the chaos.

  6. Between Halloween and Christmas it’s easy to see HOW we Americans consume 5 lbs. of sugar each year. Everything looks so yummy!

  7. [...] I was out of coconut … sorta. I had some that I had attempted to toast before our “candy making extravaganza” in mid December.  I had an issue where I over cooked it a bit … or you could say that [...]
