A Special Delivery!

We had a special delivery today.

The phone rang early this morning.  A call that we had been anticipating since Wednesday morning.

After a quick drive into the post office, Farmer Neal came home with our new chicks!

I don’t remember what kind they are … just that they are different from our old ones.  We needed new blood if you know what I mean.

This is where they live … in the old milk house.  Farmer Neal spent a few days this week getting the space ready for them.

Our hope is that one of the three clucking hens will take them, which is unlikely since they are pretty smart Mama’s and know their own.  The first attempt this morning didn’t go well so tonight he might try again.  If they won’t take them on, they will live under a heat lamp and fend for themselves.  There are worse things.

Farmer Neal covered the window with an old screen. We are nothing if not resourceful, using what is handy.   He had help of course.

The new chicks will grow into our new laying hens and replace the current ones this winter when they start to lay pretty brown eggs.

Since I refuse to go into the barn … looking in the window was enough for me … a baby chick came to us.

Turns out this chick was a big hit.

The only one afraid of him was the one with the camera.

  1. try to get comfortable with the baby chicks now, they look less threatening and you can close your hand tight on him and he will be gone, just kidding. I used to love when we got baby chicks in the mail. the little ones look like they love them already.

  2. Reminds me of my dad picking up our ‘frypan specials’ which were supposed to be all roosters…100 of them for butchering in the fall.
Awwwww, they are so cute and fluffy!

I wonder if your fear of chickens came from watching Jurassic Park when you were young, when the birdlike dinosaurs chased the kids around the kitchen in the compound!
